Aug 29, 2018 The other major difference we want to discuss is the gap between 7th generation Core i7 and i5 core counts on mobile. Prior to Skylake (6th gen), almost all Intel chips on mobile were dual-core.

Intel’s familiartick-tock approach has been around since the introduction of the “Core” brand CPUs in 2007 – The difference in the company’sprocessor generations is the micro-architecture – The BIGGESTdifference from one generation to the next is the miniaturization of thetransistors.
Ticksallowed the existing processor micro-architecture (design) to change toa new manufacturing process — each tick improved power consumption and/orclock speed.
Tocks induced a “die shrink” of the processor, bringing with it new features; improved architectural performance; ever smaller transistors; and energy efficiency.
In 2016, Intel adopted a new, three-phasepattern — The new generation process added ONE MORE step to the tick-tock formula:
- Process (theexisting micro-architecture is shrunk to a smaller process);
- Architecture (introducesa new architecture); AND
- Optimization (revisesthe new architecture).
What did this do for the company?

NEHALEM: 1STGENERATION INTEL CPUs
A significant shift for Intel?

Released on November 2008, the Nehalem (Nuh-hay-lem)generation used a 45nm (nanometer) micro-architecture that replaced the Coreand Core 2’s 65nm process, which suffered from limitations, like the inabilityto increase clock speed, and an inefficient pipeline.
Nehalem brought BIG NEW changes to Intel’s whole x86processor line.
Debuting in 4- and 8- core variants, the 4-core CPUs themselves packed up to 781 million transistors! This generation re-introduced SMT (simultaneous multi-threading), which let each core on the die run two instruction streams at the same time.
The result of this improvement?
Efficiency.
SANDY BRIDGE: 2ndGENERATION INTEL CPUs
A LOT changed here…
Released on January 2011, Sandy Bridge was manufactured in a32nm process, tick. This CPUgeneration featured the most sweeping architectural transition from Intel byincorporating the processor, memory controller, and graphical processor on asingle square silicon.
What that meant for you at the time?
Since the system components were smaller, they could beintegrated together, resulting in higher performance and reduced powerconsumption.
Intel’s latest Turbo Boost 2.0 (at the time) and improved Hyper-threading technologies enabled up to 60% improvement with quad-core mobile CPUs. And a completely revamped Intel HD integrated graphics system improved 3D gaming performance.
What’s was next for the company?
IVY BRIDGE: 3rdGENERATION INTEL CPUs
Intel retained the Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 naming convention from the two previous generations:
Launched April 2012, Ivy Bridge used a die shrink of thetransistors from a 32nm, tick to 22 nanometers, tock.
But the GIGANTIC stride made by Sandy Bridge from the first-to second-generation Core i-series chipsmade leaping to Ivy Bridge less significant (especially in both battery lifeand application performance).
But the BIGGEST advancement?
The all new 3D tri-gate transistor design.
And what about integrated graphics performance… Thetop-tier HD Graphics 4000 GPU boasted up to a 50% increase in real-world tests.

HASWELL: 4thGENERATION INTEL CPUs
These were banner products for Intel — the introduction oflow-power CPUs designed for Ultrabooks meant an 8 hour batterylife was a reachable standard.
But Haswell was FULL of contradictions…
Intel officially announced this new generation on June 2013– While Ivy Bridge was the first 22nm 3D transistor products, tock. It was the Haswell generation that fullyoptimized the process, representing a tick in Intel’s overarching“tick-tock” refresh strategy.
How, then, was Haswell able to consume less power?
Integration reduces power-consumption and cost, while increasing performance: The ace-in-the-whole for Haswell CPUs was the SoC (System-on-Chip) trend and the FinFET process.
Both technologies were instrumental in helping these chipsenjoy a 3- to 8% performance increase compared to Ivy Bridge.
BROADWELL: 5thGENERATION INTEL CPUs
What could this generation POSSBILY bring to the table, then?
Released January 2015, the die size of these new CPUs shrunk37% using Intel’s new 14nm process — It meant that Intel could to fit 35% moretransistors than the previous generation, for a total of 1.3 billion! Tock.
Features included voice interaction when paired with Intel ® RealSenseTM 3D technology. And Intel’s WiDi 514 wireless streaming option allowed full 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) video streaming for a more immersive experience.
How did this benefit users?
Intel CPUs could do the same amount of work with less power and longer battery longevity on laptops that ran cooler.
SKYLAKE: 6thGENERATION INTEL CPUs
If it seemed like Skylake came right at the heels ofBroadwell, that’s because the 5th generation Broadwell CPUs tooklonger than expected to arrive.
Launched on August 2015, Skylake represented Intel’s tock in the cycle — Extending the 14nm micro-architecture resulted in a quad-core 2.7GHz i7-6820HK processor (the first over-clockable mobile CPU); the company’s first quad-core i5 models (at 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz); and wireless charging solutions.
In this generation, CPU performance grew 2.5x faster; Intel’s “Gen9” integrated graphics performance received more than 30x the gains over Broadwell; and battery life was 3x better.
But the primary focus?
You could drive as many as three 4K displays at once!
KABY LAKE: 7thGENERATION INTEL CPUs
Alas, Intel had to abandon its long-standing “tick-tock” cadence with this generation of CPUs. But Kaby Lake was behind some of the best laptops in 2017, like the Dell XPS 13.
Announced on August 2016, Kaby Lake was Intel’s third crackat the 14nm process, and the second tock in their tick-tock strategy.
Was this:

Obviously, the company had to re-imagine what generationmeant.
One main feature of the 7th gen CPUs was support for Optane Memory. Video improvements included: 360-degree videos; virtual and augmented reality; an update to Gen9 graphics that featured Main10 support; and user functionality, like Windows Hello.
Web performance saw a 19% boost in Intel’s benchmarks, and productivity apps were 12% faster.
COFFEE LAKE: 8thGENERATION INTEL CPUs
Core count increased MASSIVELY here…
As did clockspeed,
As did Turbo Boostspeeds.
Released August 2017, Intel’s 5th go-round withthe 14nm manufacturing process pushed things to the limits: to use the official phraseology, themicro-architecture was 14nm++.
Finally! Intel implementedHyper-Threadingcapabilities in its Core i3 CPU for notebooks — They boasted 4-cores each forthe first time in mainstream CPU history!
Even the mild-mannered Intel Core i5-8400 became a hexa-coremonster. The Core i7-8700 also squeezedin six cores, brandishing base/boost speeds of 3.6GHz and 4.3GHz, respectively.
But perhaps best of all, Coffee Lake introduced a MORE POWERFUL family to the line-up – the Core i9-9990K, which really shook things up.
COFFEE LAKE REFRESH: 9thGENERATION INTEL CPUs
Intel lost us all when it took a sharp turn and abandonedits tick-tock regime for the new: process, architecture, optimization, rhythm.
But the 9th Generation Intel Coffee Lake Refreshdidn’t fool us this time round…
Released April 2019, the 14nm micro-architecture got refreshed with features, like Intel’s Optane H10 memory module for faster load times and display refresh rates for games versus Optane Memeory; faster processing for 4K video editing; Wi-Fi 6 offering 10Gbps maximum down-load speeds; and Thunderbolt 3 support.
The Coffee Lake Refresh of the Core i9-9990K has helped this processor remain hands-down the fastest consumer CPU on the market right now, dominating everything else in both single core and multi-core performance.
SO, THERE YOU HAVE IT!
The difference between Intel processor generations is in themicro-architecture.
Deciding what generation of CPU to go with ultimately comesdown to the kind of performance you want from your laptop — Sometimesimprovements made to a new generation limits beloved features from the previousgeneration.
But knowing Intel’s product release structure; the company’smanufacturing process; and the micro-architecture of their CPUs goes a long wayto help you understand just what you’re getting in the laptop you’reconsidering.
But don’t knock yourself out trying to get the latest andgreatest… the CPU is NOT the determining factor of the overall performance ofyour laptop. Wanda to kyozou iso ps2 files.

The 6th Generation “Skylake” Intel Core i5-6200U, just like its slightly faster i5-6300U sibling, is a mid-range processor for mainstream laptops. This 6th Gen U parts offers better performance than the i3-6010U and are somewhat slower than the i7-6500U from the same CPU series.

Intel Core i5-6200U / i5-6300U 6th Gen Skylake PassMark CPU Benchmark
In comparison to its older 5th Gen “Broadwell” i5-5200U and i5-5300U equivalents, the i5-6200U and i5-6300U “Skylake” are only marginally faster. The same applies to their Intel HD 520 integrated graphics which replaces the HD 5500. On the positive side, the 6th Gen version provides a greater power efficiency and smoother high-resolution video playback, especially 4K content. The i5-6200U / i5-6300U is an excellent choice for the daily home and office tasks and casual gaming. It can be additionally used for more hardware demanding tasks like work in photo and video editing or graphics design programs. If these tasks are the main purpose of using your laptop, systems with a quad-core Intel i7 and preferably a dedicated video card are recommended.
Real World Use Review
We recorded a video (below) showing what performing usual computing tasks looks like on the Intel Core i5-6200U. The i5-6300U performs very similar, with almost unnoticeable boost over the 5200U. We reviewed multitasking, web browsing, video playback, Office document, image and video editing, and gaming capabilities. For the test, we used a Windows 10 Home-based HP Pavilion 15.6″ laptop with the i5-6200U, 6GB of RAM, a mechanical 500GB hard drive at 5,400rpm, and Full HD display. A typical 2015 / 2016 mainstream notebook. Please keep in mind the same CPU could perform somewhat different in other systems, depending on other hardware specs, such as RAM size, single- or dual-channel RAM setups, and storage speed, as well as cooling solution of each laptop.
Web browsing was simply flawless, even when you have multiple data-heavy web pages opened. The same applies to video playback, with some software-related exceptions. CPU usage during Full HD and Ultra HD (4K) video playback was almost unnoticeable, thanks to its hardware-based video decoding capabilites. Exceptions are 4K YouTube video playbacks in Google Chrome browser and 4K playback in VLC media player program, producing video stuttering and very high CPU load of up to 100%. The problem in Chrome can be fixed with h264ify browser extension, while in VLC player you’ll have to tweak video settings to make the playback smoother. As for work in the Office suite, the most popular apps – Word and Excel run perfectly. Although professional photo and video editing remains in the domain of the quad-core Intel chips, the i5-6200U provides decent performance for these tasks, too.
Difference Between 5th And 6th Generation I5 Laptop
As for gaming, we made a separate review of the chip’s Intel HD 520 integrated graphics. In short, gaming performance is pretty much basic. But, you’ll be able to play many of the most popular games, such as League of Legends and Counter Strike GO on high graphics settings. You can even run some hardware-demanding titles like GTA V and Battlefield 4 if you dial down graphics quality. Keep in mind that some games require 8GB of RAM to work properly, so we had to upgrade it from 6GB to 8GB for testing purposes.
